Set within the lush landscape of Hanuman World Phuket, Three Monkeys Restaurant is more than a dining destination—it is an immersive environment shaped by nature, architecture, and experience.

Built around a Tropical Modern Treehouse concept, the venue integrates seamlessly with its surroundings. Existing trees remain untouched, becoming both structural and visual elements of the design. Wooden structures, nest-like forms, and layered platforms create the sensation of being suspended within a living forest—an architectural language that feels organic, fluid, and deeply connected to nature.

From an engineering perspective, this design presents a unique challenge: how to introduce a professional sound system into an environment that is open, irregular, and constantly interacting with natural elements—while still maintaining clarity, consistency, and control.

Aura Visual System was entrusted with delivering that balance.

Project Brief: Flexibility Across a Multi-Zone Environment

Three Monkeys is not a conventional restaurant. It is a collection of experiences layered into one destination, where each zone serves a different purpose and mood.

From restaurant and café areas spanning indoor, semi-outdoor, and outdoor environments, to reception and activity zones, multiple DJ performance locations, and live music setups for duo or trio performances—every space requires its own sonic character.

The client’s vision was clear: a system that delivers consistent, high-quality sound across all zones, regardless of environmental conditions. It needed to support everything from subtle background music to live bands and high-energy DJ sets, while remaining intuitive and easy to control for daily operations.

System Design Strategy: One Ecosystem, Multiple Sound Behaviors

To respond to the diversity of the environment, Aura Visual System developed a unified audio ecosystem built around Void Acoustics Cyclone Series.

The Cyclone range was selected for its ability to operate reliably across indoor, semi-outdoor, and fully outdoor conditions. Its weather-resistant construction, controlled dispersion, and consistent tonal character made it possible to maintain a cohesive sonic identity throughout the venue—while still adapting to the unique acoustic behavior of each space.

Rather than treating each zone as an isolated system, the design approach focused on continuity—ensuring that as guests move through the venue, the sound evolves naturally without disruption.

Zone-by-Zone Implementation

Restaurant Zone: Balance Between Ambiance and Energy

The main restaurant area transitions between indoor intimacy and outdoor openness. Inside, Cyclone 4 loudspeakers are carefully tuned for low-level background music, preserving clarity while allowing conversation to remain effortless. Moving outdoors, the system shifts to Cyclone 10 units, providing increased output and headroom to accommodate proximity to DJ activity and live performances.

This zone also supports live musicians, where flexibility becomes essential. With an intuitive setup using Allen & Heath CQ18T mixers and CC-7 touch control interfaces, performers can easily connect instruments, adjust monitor levels, and switch between live and playback sources. The result is a seamless transition between dining ambiance and live entertainment.

Café Zone: Open-Air Coverage with Full-Range Presence

The café area opens predominantly to the outdoors, requiring broader coverage and greater environmental resilience. Here, Cyclone 55 loudspeakers work in combination with Cyclone Bass units to deliver even dispersion across wide seating areas.

The system maintains a full-range response with controlled low-frequency support, creating an atmosphere that feels lively yet comfortable—never overpowering, but always present.

Reception & Activity Zone: Clarity in Motion

As a high-traffic transitional space, the reception and activity zone demands clarity and reliability. Cyclone 8 loudspeakers, paired with Stasys subwoofers, provide a balanced system that welcomes guests with warmth while maintaining enough presence to support multimedia content and announcements.

The sound here is designed not to dominate, but to guide the experience.

DJ System: Portable Performance, Integrated Precision

One of the most distinctive features of Three Monkeys is its movable DJ concept. Rather than fixing the DJ booth in a single location, the system allows performances to shift across different zones of the venue.

To support this flexibility, Aura Visual System deployed a portable high-performance setup using Air Vantage V2 loudspeakers and Stasys Xair subwoofers. This system delivers the power and impact required for DJ performances, while remaining adaptable to different environments.

Pre-configured presets were developed for each potential DJ location, allowing seamless alignment between the portable system and the fixed installation. As a result, transitions between zones remain smooth, consistent, and interruption-free.

Control Architecture: Centralized Intelligence with Local Flexibility

Given the venue's phased development and daily operational needs, the system required a highly flexible control backbone to support upgrades without disrupting guests.

At its core is the Allen & Heath AHM-32 processor, integrated with a Dante audio network to enable fully independent zone control and flexible signal routing. Whether the source is background playback, live music, or a DJ performance, the system can adapt instantly.

Custom user interfaces, accessible via CC-7 touchscreens, allow staff to control volume levels, select sources, and manage presets with ease. The system is designed not only for performance, but for practicality—ensuring that daily operation remains intuitive and efficient.

Outcome: Sound as Part of the Environment

The final result is a sound system that feels inherently connected to its surroundings. Coverage remains consistent across all zones, transitions between spaces are seamless, and the tonal balance enhances rather than competes with the natural environment.

Beyond performance, the visual integration of the system plays an equally important role. The loudspeakers do not disappear into the background—they complement the architectural language, adding character while respecting the organic design.

At Three Monkeys, sound is not an addition to the space. It is part of the experience itself.

Here, sound does not compete with nature—it becomes part of it.
